LESBIAN PORTRETS (6) Hollywood divas Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo
On Screen in '30s Hollywood, a new trend seemed to be emerging - screen goddesses who were popping up in roles where they wore the panths and got to kiss..
the girls. And - surprise, surprise - the two icons doing this had been lovers of Mercedes De Acosta!
In Morocco (1930), Marlene Dietrich appeared as a cabaret performer who, clad in top hat and tails, first gives a rose, and then a smacking kiss, to a woman in the audience, to much ooh-ing and ah-ing.
Three years later, Greta Garbo fulfilled a long-held ambition by portraying Queen Christina. Although, in true Hollywood fashion, the film's central romance was between the male-attired Christina and diplomat Antonio (John Gilbert), early scenes touch on the Queen's relationship with Countess Ebba Sparre. They share an intimate kiss during one scene and, when Christina promises to see her that night, Ebba complains, ''You'll be surrounded by musty old men and musty old papers, and I won't be able to get near you.''
