Santa Teresa of Avila lived in 16th century Spain, and founded 20 convents which adhered to the strictest rules of separatism. But in a biography of Teresa, The Eagle and the Dove (1943), it emerged that Teresa has been in love with one of her young female cousins. Her biographer happened to be Vita Sackville-West.
