LESBIAN PORTRETS (11) Sergeant Johnnie Phelps

Johnnie Phelps, a sergeant in the WACS, was hardly at ease when her commanding officer - who just happened to be General Dwight Eisenhower - ordered her to root out all the lesbians...
in her battalion.  According to Phelps, that meant about 97 per cent of them.  Displaying immense courage in the face of enemy fire, Phelps told him, ''If the General pleases, I'll be happy to do this investigation for you, but you have to know that the first name on the list will be mine''.  At which point, another WAC in the room said, ''Sir, you must be aware that Sergeant Phelp's name will be second, but mine will be first''.  Phelps continued, ''I think the General should be aware that among those women are some of the most highly decorated women of the war.  There have been no cases of misconduct and, as a matter of fact, every six months the General has awarded us a commendation for meritorious service''.  Eisenhower said ''Forget the order''.  Phelps later recalled, ''It was a good battalion to be in!''.
