Mary Renault, the English-born historical novelist who lived most of her life in South Africa with her lover, Julie Mullard, was tackling gay male themes in her books. Set in the masculine military world of
ancient Greece, The Charioteer, The King Must Die and Fire From Heaven became bestsellers. Her only lesbian-themed novel was The Middle Mist, which was originally titled The Friendly Young Ladies, but Renault's publishers, concerned about how sexually explicit her book were becoming, toned it down.
