Lesbian Portraits (20) - Barbara Gittings founded the NY branch of the Daughters of Bilitis.

In 1965, the first known gay rights demonstration - held in protest against the US State Department's purge of homosexuals - was staged outside the White House.  One of the participants was Barbara Gittings from Philadelphia, who founded the New York branch of the Daughters of Bilitis. Gittings still had vivid memories of the first meeting of DOB she attended in San Fransisco:  ''I was in a room with 12 other lesbians for the first time, and oh, what a thrill that was!''.
